Okay here's the story:
Bo and I went on a proxy hunt for Ken. We were in this area the night before and called but saw or heard nothing. Early the next morning we saw a cow and calf very close to camp. Bo's plan was to go out and call for an hour or so and see what happened. Well, THIS happened!! This bull came through camp and actually got his foot hung up on the bow line of our boat! He was moving toward Bo's calls and I happened to be in the path. He was a beauty and so much fun to watch. Bo could barely see him and was not able to get a shot. This moose ended up getting spooked and ran off.

We pick the best spots for camp! HA! Big grizzly tracks! Bo said they are old tracks, but I still slept with bear spray above my pillow.
We figured that since the bull was spooked and RAN away that there was no point in staying in this spot. However, we decided that I would stay in the boat and start packing up camp while Bo went about 100 yards to see if he could call it back in. About 20 minutes later - I heard a shot, and another and another! It was not the same one that came through camp, but it was also a dandy!

Bo shot this moose at 12 yards and after 3 shots with a 375 H&H magnum it fell at only 8 yards away! Notice in the picture Bo is standing were he was when the moose fell. I'm glad I was in the boat. This would have been a little close for comfort for me!

Bo got this moose while proxy hunting for Ken Richardson.
51 inches wide
4 brow tines on each side

After 3 years of moose hunting, you start to figure out how to deal with these huge critters. Use as many gadgets as possible! (especially after back surgery)This gadget is called a rope-along. It also helps to shoot them close to the river. We only had about 30 feet to carry it to the boat. Bo said from now on he will try to get the moose to carry his own hindquarters as close to the boat as possible.
We stopped to have a Mountain House brunch.

And the worst part of a proxy hunt-destroying the trophy value!

This is Kaitlyn Moos and her very first moose!!! Her dad, Kenton, works for US Fish and Wildlife in Galena, AK. This was taken weeks ago and I am just now posting it, sorry Kaitlyn. Congrats! NICE JOB! I know Kenton is one proud papa!
This is Clint, a friend from Conway, Arkansas. For those of you who remember, Clint is one the wildlife guys who was working the bear move we went on in Arkansas years ago.The one where we got to hold the tiny black bear cubs. Clint killed this bear in Minnesota at our friend Brian's hunting lodge. This is the same place we went in 2006 and Bo killed his first black bear. Thanks for the picture Clint! It brings back wonderful memories. Congrats on an awesome bear (with a pistol)!!
This is a board that everybody put their empty cartridge (or arrow) that they used to kill the bear. Us on the left, our friend Rick in the middle and Clint on top. Great memories!!

GREAT start to the hunting trip!!! Stormy weather in the forecast and the windshield wiper broke!!

A little weasel we saw as we were walking through the woods. It was so cute. It kept poking it's head out looking at us. These weasels turn snow white in the winter and are called ermine.
swans
Sleeping in the boat and it is actually quite toasty! Of course, the -20 below sleeping bag doesn't hurt.

Getting the axe - we are wet and cold and need a campfire.

Awe! How sweet

This is an old campsite we found last year. We stopped in to cook lunch and take a little break from hunting. I started out cooking burgers on this grate we found, but they all fell apart and landed in the fire.

Plan B: hot dogs
little shelter to get out of the rain

Bo's moose
After enduring days of pouring rain and heavy winds, we were greeted with this beautiful rainbow while packing out our moose!

Abby is doing her part to help us clean the moose.
Our friend, Thomas, who lives in Anchorage came out to McGrath and got himself a nice moose.

Thomas and Chris after their long day of moose skinning and butchering.
Looks like we've got enough meat for the winter! Actually this is our moose and Thomas' moose.
Our buddy Achilles - he stayed with us last week
