Fish and Game have bear bait stations in hopes of later trapping and collaring bears. Roger let us go with him to check it!

This is the shuttle bus that took us into Denali National Park. We took the 11 hour trip to Wonder Lake and back. Had a blast!

Sometimes the park road got a little scary!

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

This is the park road. Private vehicles can only go in the first 15 miles. After that you can take a shuttle bus the rest of the way.
Denali (Mt. McKinley)
It was a cloudy day but we got to see some of it.

Grizzly walking down the park road
Grizzly bear and Golden eagle
Not sure what was going on but the eagle did not want the bear around! It was trying to run it off and the bear finally got tired of it at swatted at the eagle several times.
At a rest stop along the way

On the plane ride back from the refuge. Looks like Bo is the one flying, but don't worry he's not!

The barge that goes from camp side to fuel side-at refuge field camp. That's a bug jacket I'm wearing. Ugly but it works!

That's Mike driving.

This is the plane that we flew to the refuge in! That's Ken on the left-the pilot. He is from Texas!

This is the Innoko River at the Innoko National Wildlife Refuge field camp.

They built this platform so that next year the tractor won't be under water AGAIN!

Moving propane tanks

Loading 3 bottles of propane to take to camp side

This is fuel side of camp. The set up is kinda strange. This side is next to the river, so this is where the barge delivers the fuel (propane, av gas, diesel). Then as needed, they put the bottles on the barge and take them across the lake to camp.

We are standing on the "fuel side" of the camp looking across at "camp side". We take a little barge back and forth across.

Sleeping cabins

The kitchen cabin

Kinda hard to see it in this picture-click to enlarge and you can see a little better.
The mountains in this area look like they have a pink blanket on top. Tons of fireweed blooming!!
Fireweed comes back strong in places that have burned. By the way, the haze you see is smoke from wildfires nearby. Not close enough to see, though.
This is Fireweed. Imagine how many it takes to make a mountain top pink!

DON'T FORGET TO CLICK ON THE PICTURE TO MAKE IT BIGGER!-EARL I'M TALKING TO YOU! YOU CAN SEE THE BOATS REALLY GOOD IF YOU DO THAT.
Baby bunny found some shade under my cabbage!!!!

I moved him to the woods, so he wouldn't eat in the garden.

The garden is really growing now!! We are harvesting lettuce, spinach and radishes already!

Those are potatoes to the left. We left them out of the fence because neither moose or rabbits will eat them.

We have planted- green beans, snow peas, potatoes (2 different varieties), turnips, carrots, broccoli, several kinds of lettuce, spinach, cabbage, radishes, celery, zucchini, squash, and cucumber and tomatoes (just experimental, we also have those planted in a greenhouse).

The garbage cans are so that we can fill them with water and let the water warm up before we put it on the plants. This is more important at the beginning stages, but we are just now finding that out!

Strawberry patch. We had two plants to start with, and we transplanted the rest from a friend's yard.

Our new and improved dog pen. Now they will have shade on these HOT days! HA!

(Notice the dogs are not even in there! They are inside where there are no mosquitoes.)

My first poppy!! Started it from seed!

Sarah Palin was in McGrath on Wed, July 8th for a bill signing.
The bill is- "to extend the termination date of Board of Veterinary Examiners"
McGrath was chosen because of our involvement with the Iditarod Sled Dog Race.
